Born on January 15, 1981 in Goslar, Germany as a member of the second generation of Turkish-Germans, Belit Onay (38) studied law in Hannover. 

The assassination attempt in Solingen drove him to into politics, as he realized the importance of young people getting involved in politics. He wants the voices of immigrants be heard and incorporated to shape everyday life in their new homeland. 

He has been shaping the municipal politics of Hanover for four years in the city council for the Greens and since 2013. He has been a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament.

In October 2019, he is elected as the Mayor of Hannover from the Green Party lines. He is married to Derya Onay. They have a child.
